Select Board approves conservation attorney, sets Marathon logistics

Ashland's Select Board authorized outside legal counsel for the Conservation Commission's 10-60 Main Street 40B hearing, capping costs at $10,000, in a unanimous vote. Vice Chair Brandi Kinsman opened the Feb. 18 meeting with an update on Boston Marathon logistics involving more than 48 agencies across eight communities and a $500,000 Complete Streets Grant for intersection improvements. Town Manager Michael Herbert presented the FY27 budget, showing a $196,350 deficit that balloons to $704,000 after state aid and debt service—a gap that remains if the proposed operational override fails.
Key department increases include $300,000 for an additional firefighter per shift, $2.75 million for schools, and $1.27 million in total benefits and insurance rises. The Board appointed Yolanda Greaves as its representative to the Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee and unanimously approved four committee appointments and $34,365 in Food Pantry donations on the consent agenda.
