Ashland Senior Center wins state innovation award
The Massachusetts Council on Aging gave Ashland Senior Center its Innovation of the Year award for a new Digital Literacy Lab built with a $25,000 grant. The lab offers accessible equipment and new classes, including computer skills, digital literacy, writing and virtual exploration programs.
The Town of Ashland announced Oct. 29 that the Ashland Senior Center received the Innovation of the Year Award from the Massachusetts Council on Aging.
Candice Wilson, director of the Ashland Senior Center, accepted the award for her work reimagining the center's computer lab. Using a $25,000 grant from the Massachusetts Councils on Aging, Wilson created a new accessible Digital Literacy Lab.
The space includes upgraded computers, touchscreen monitors, and an instructor laptop linked to a Smart TV and ScreenBeam system for group teaching. It also features electronic height-adjustable tables, adjustable chairs, large-key keyboards, document holders and independent-learning headsets.
The senior center team now offers new programs including free basic computer skills classes, digital literacy training, writing classes and virtual exploration options such as virtual tours, webcams and podcasts. Bose headsets are available to borrow from the Main Office for private listening.
The town said in the release, "This project has already shown how valuable it is to the community through new programming and extended use."
