ASHLAND — Zoning Board of Appeals continues hearing on 55 West Union Street affordable housing project. Chair John Trefethen and the Board postponed the 40B Comprehensive Permit decision on the 116-unit development to May 12, 2026 to allow the applicant to conduct soil borings testing feasibility of a gravity-fed sewer line; DPW Director Dan Mauer opposed adding a pump station, citing the town's Chestnut Street station's $2,000 monthly electricity cost and current understaffing of water-sewer operations. Applicant representatives offered $50,000 to cover two years of pump station maintenance if that option proceeds, but Peer Reviewer Greg Eldridge and town engineers recommended the gravity routing along Memorial Drive to avoid permanent town liability.
