ASHLAND — The Ashland Conservation Commission continued its hearing on a 40B project at 10-60 Main Street to July 20 after debating contamination testing at the former mill site. Vice Chair Carl Hakansson challenged wetland scientist Chris Lucas over Release Abatement Measure data showing TCE at up to 19.1 micrograms per cubic meter at 10 Main Street, well above the state's residential screening value of 2, saying Lucas's earlier answer "suggested that there was no presence, and that's not true." The applicant agreed to 11 additional soil sampling locations, including inside the building and at an old millrace tied to the EPA's Nyanza plume, which Campbell Environmental's George Campbell confirmed intersects the site. Resident Lawrence DeYoung urged the board to consider a performance bond: "we need enough money available to clean, stabilize the site." The commission voted 6-0 to continue the hearing to July 20.
